So little did I know that I had chosen the most expensive city to live in Germany... This was one of the first things I learned when I moved to Munich. I've never been to Europe before, and for what my friends had told me I came knowing only this: Germans are cold and not very friendly, you will move around using the metro, It's freaking cold all year round and you will drink a lot of beer. Not all of that ended up being true but so far its been 3 months and I've come a long long way since. I've learned so much about the lifestyle here, and even though I still have so much more to learn, I can share some pretty useful tips on how to survive in Munich.
Coming from Mexico I knew living in Europe was going to be expensive, but I had no idea of how much more expensive it would be. I'm a student, which means I have to survive on a student budget, which its not easy when you have a shoe problem and end up buying more shoes than you need. My first couple of weeks here shopping was what my friends and I used to do all the time. We go to school in the city center, which means that we walk around Munich's main shopping area "Karlsplatz (Stachus)" every single day. Coming from Latin America my friends and I were not used to the cold weather here so we needed to invest in a good winter wardrobe, which was the perfect excuse to buy new clothes. Since we had just arrived to the city and had pre paid host families we didn't have much to worry about. We had 3 months to extend our visa and the only thing we actually needed to get done was buying a new phone sim card. In other words we didn't have a care in the world. I new I would eventually had to look for an apartment but that was not the first thing in my mind. I just wanted to party. Oktoberfest was just around the corner.
